For the past several months, Jordan has become obsessed with learning to dive. In July she took swimming lessons and watched some really good divers practicing and was entranced. Unfortunately, she was terrified of actually going headfirst into the water and wouldn't try. Since I have never dived a single time in my life, I was completely unable to give her any suggestions or reassurances. She spent 3 weeks with my family up north and in that time, she got a little closer. Megan took her to a pool and she got on the diving board and tried a couple times, but then she psyched herself out and wouldn't try again. In the beginning of this month she started swimming again and now she had a swim instructor teaching her how to dive. She started squatting down and getting in headfirst and did all right. On Thursday of last week her teacher stayed late to give her more instruction in how to improve her technique and by the 12th or 15th dive Jordan was getting really good at it. On Tuesday all the previous weeks confidence disappeared and she stood at the pools edge without being able to get herself to jump in. So yesterday the teacher just kind of shoved her in the water the first couple times. A risky move, since it could have backfired, but thankfully, Jordan got more confidence, and by the end of the day, she was jumping and diving into the water with very good form (says the completely inexpert and biased mama). After she had jumped and dived a couple times she came over to me and whispered, "do you think I could be in the Olympics?"
What can a mom say but, "of course!"
